Operations Department – General Staff
Do you have excellent communication skills? Do you enjoy providing top-notch customer service? Do you love solving people’s random and crazy problems? If you do, come join us!
The Operations Department (a.k.a. “Ops “) is hiring four General Staff members: three for regular shifts, and one floater to pitch in during meal times and to provide last-minute coverage if necessary. We run 24 hours a day in three 8-hour shifts, from 8 a.m. on Friday to around 4 p.m. on Sunday. We give some leeway for meals and pre-arranged breaks (for example, if you tell us beforehand that you want to visit a panel), but otherwise we work on a set schedule. Our work is almost entirely internal: our mission is to provide information and assistance to all Katsucon departments, although we occasionally work with attendees as well.
Because we are Katsucon’s customer service department, we provide support to other departments by answering questions, routing housekeeping and hotel-related requests to Gaylord staff, and posting convention-related information on Katsucon’s website and Twitter feed. We use CB radio as our primary method of communication with the rest of Katsucon, transmitting information across channels as needed. We perform in-person services too, such answering walk-in questions, and Ops personnel going to other locations within the convention. We are also one of the few departments who interact directly with the Gaylord, so we receive our colleagues’ water-station refill, trash pickup, maintenance and similar requests, routing them to the Gaylord, and following up to ensure that Katsucon’s needs are fulfilled.
The type of activity is also unpredictable: we are a catch-all, filling a variety of needs that have ranged from sharpening pencils to serving as an impromptu crisis center, so you will have plenty of opportunities to flex your problem-solving skills! Ops is also a great way to get to know Katsucon from the inside, and to meet staffers from all across the convention!
As a General Staff member, you will primarily take notes on Ops’ interactions with Gaylord and Katsucon staff, post updates to Twitter and the website, and help answer questions that come to us over CB radio and through walk-ins. You may also be asked to work directly with Gaylord staff, run messages to other departments, and perform random tasks. Since you are most likely new to staffing, we will look to you for assistance and backup: you will help relay answers, but not necessarily to know them, and that is fine! You will also get used to speaking over CB radio, faster than you might expect.
If you are interested, here are the characteristics we’re looking for:
- Dependability
- Excellent listening skills
- Ability to follow directions
- Can-do attitude and willingness to pitch in
- Typing speed of +50 wpm
- Reasonably good grammar and spelling skills
- Willingness to speak loudly and clearly over CB radio
- Enjoyment of corny humor (if you think we’re joking, we’re not!)
If this sounds like you, just fill out an application form and it will be sent to our HR dept. If you have a shift preference or limits on your schedule, we will do our best to accommodate you, but please understand that our focus is on achieving complete coverage for each shift.
If you’d like to join us but are looking for something a little less intense, we’d love to have you volunteer! Just contact volunteers@katsucon.org and ask for us by name!
Volunteers – General Staff
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Willing to work long hours in extremely noisy conditions,
- flexible to fill in for any department in the convention,
- able to move quickly between areas of the convention (no dawdling),
- able to keep a cool head under stress,
- ability to find items in a large pile a plus,
- to be extremely flexible in a the face of issues,
- an understanding that attending any programming in the convention may be impossible,

There are new positions available all the time, even if they’re not listed here, so if you don’t see what you’re interested in above but you’d still like to be part of the best convention staff out there, we’re happy to accept your application.
