Maryland State Requirements Information
We apologize for the late notice and appreciate our attendees letting us know how having the event in Maryland affects our responsibility regarding taxes and licensing in for the Katsucon Artist Areas. We were unaware that changing from a Virginia to a Maryland venue would create this much additional work for all involved.
All sellers at the event are obligated to charge 6% Maryland sales tax separate from the amount of the sale.
As per Maryland State Law we, as organizers of the event, must submit the contact information for anyone planning to sell any merchandise at the show. The Maryland Comptroller’s Office has told us that they do not differentiate between exhibitors/artists and merchants as far as sales tax collection is concerned. As a result, we will be submitting the contact information for those persons setting up tables in the Katsucon Artist Areas as well as those setting up tables in the Merchants Room. The MD Comptroller has assured us that all contact data will remain private. The MD Comptroller will be assigning 30-day Temporary Sales Tax IDs to those people who do not already have a Sales Tax ID in Maryland. If you have questions regarding the necessity of having a temporary Sales Tax ID for the event, please call the MD Comptroller at 410-767-1543 and they will be more than happy to assist you.
As we expect a visit from the Maryland Comptroller Field Enforcement Unit, all tables will be required to present a filled out copy of Maryland Trader’s License or Exhibitor’s Affidavit. The Maryland Trader’s License or Exhibitor’s Affidavit must be displayed at your table at all times while you are present.
We will be providing blank copies of the Exhibitor’s Affidavit at the event; you may also download a copy from the website. If you are unsure if you meet the requirements of the Exhibitor’s Affidavit, please call the Prince George’s County Clerk of the Circuit Court at (301) 952-3330.
Thank you for your patience and understanding. Please let us know if you have any questions or if there’s any way we may assist you.

Katsucon Artist Areas Check-In Reminder
Valid ID Requirement
All Artists and crafters are required to Check-In with the KAA staff prior to claiming their tables or booth. As is listed in the Rules this check-in must be done before 9pm on the Friday of the convention, otherwise they will loose their claim to that space without refund.
When checking in all Artists and crafters must provide the following:
- A printed copy of their confirmation email with their confirmation code.
- A valid government issued ID with their Date of Birth.
KAA staff will not allow an Artist or crafter to check in without both of these items. No exceptions.
This year to simplify the Check-In for Artists and crafters, those who have pre-registered will pick up their convention memberships at the KAA staff Check-In desk instead of waiting in the usual pre-registration line for them.
To clarify any confusion the KAA staff will only be accepting the following list of approved government ID’s:
- US Passport
- Permanent Resident Card
- Drivers License
- Government issued ID card with Date of Birth (Federal, State, or local)
- Military ID
- No college ID’s or other ID’s will be accepted.
Any questions should be directed to artalley@katsucon.org.
The New Katsucon Artist Areas
Katsucon is proud to announce that with our new facility we have restructured what was formerly referred to as Artist Alley into the newly formed Katsucon Artist Areas!
We are excited about this new opportunity to expand the different areas Artists have grown into over the past years. Now that we have the space to do it, we’re moving forward!
Within the Katsucon Artist Areas (KAA) you will find the Artist Alley, Webcomics, Industry/Guests/Conventions etc., and our brand new Katsu Crafters Corner! We are very happy to offer our crafting artists a place to showcase their works finally, and we hope that we do not disappoint!
Each area under the KAA remains it’s own specific area.
- Artist Alley is intended for amateur artists to display, sell and commission their original 2 dimensional artwork. Such artwork should draw upon influences from Japanese culture and society
- Webcomics are, of course, where all the online comic, doujinshi, and zine creators can physically interface with their fans, sell and showcase their hardcopy works
- Industry/Guests/Conventions etc., is the section for our Industry sponsors, convention Guests who want to get up close and personal with you, and other conventions and organizations that are appearing at Katsucon 16
- Lastly we come to our Katsu Crafters Corner! This special area for fiber and craft related artists is actually in the Vendors Hall and consists of booths rather than tables as we realize some of our crafters like to have large displays. Here they can sell and commission their works for new fans
We realize that with all changes come growing pains and look forward to your constructive criticism of the new areas. If you have any specific questions please feel free to contact Artist Areas and be sure to check out the dedicated section on the forums.
